The Architectural Association School of Architecture has announced that Eva Franch i Gilabert has been chosen as its new director following a vote which saw her receive the most support in a contested election since 1990.
Franch i Gilabert was chosen as director of the prestigious architecture school after a months-long search to replace former director Brett Steele and interim director Samantha Hardingham.
She was chosen from a shortlist of three candidates, receiving 67 percent of the vote. A total of 876 ballots were cast by students, academic and administration staff, and council members, the Architectural Association (AA) said in a statement.
“We wish to congratulate Eva on her election and receiving the highest majority in a contested election since 1990,” the London-based AA said in a statement.
Franch i Gilabert believes that architecture “has the ability to bring together the social, the economic, the political, and the technological in a project of collective aspiration…
“But more importantly, architecture is the discipline that understands society as a whole, being able to advocate for those who are unable to sit down at the decision-making table. Architecture sits for all,” Franch i Gilabert wrote in her vision statement which was presented to the School of Architecture last month.
The New York-based architect has served as chief curator and executive director of the Storefront for Art and Architecture since 2010. The non-profit produces exhibitions, events, competitions, publications, and projects to advance innovative positions in architecture, art, and design.
She is also currently an associate professor at The Cooper Union School of Architecture in New York, and has taught at Columbia University, the IUAV University of Venice, SUNY Buffalo, and Rice University School of Architecture.
The AA’s formal announcement of France i Gilabert’s appointment will follow final contractual negotiations. The architect will remain in New York until June, according to Curbed.
Established in 1890, the Architectural Association School of Architecture is one of the most prestigious and competitive architecture schools in the world. It offers both undergraduate and postgraduate programs in various specializations.
