Summer cycle of events organised by Polytechnic Museum and Strelka Institute as a part of Polytech.Science.Art programme introduces contemporary practices of technological and scientific art.

This is a chance to meet media artists and curators, visit open workshops and witness unique audio and audiovisual performances. Strelka Magazine compiled a special guide giving you the opportunity to visit a European festival without actually going abroad, hear music in computer noise and become a part of one famous artist’s performance.


Disnovation is an annual festival based in France and devoted to contemporary art. The festival manifesto proclaims that today technology is developed just for the sake of technology and has lost all of its meaning. The questions organisers are addressing the artists with are all dealing with this problem in some way. As a response, the festival offers film screenings, exhibitions, discussions and master classes. Traditionally Disnovation takes place in Paris but for two days only it will relocate to Moscow.
The first day will see a lecture by festival curator Nicolas Maigret and the presentation of a scent (yes, a scent) called Original Computer Store.
Nicolas Maigret is known not just for Disnovation: you will find him among participants of the famous Berlin festival Transmediale, his works were exhibited at the Museum of Arts and Design in New York, China Museum of Digital Art in Beijing and at the Pirate Bay 10th anniversary in Stockholm. Nicolas studies internal processes of modern media, representing their flaws and limitations via audiovisual experiments. This practice would be the main focus of his lecture.
The lecture will be complemented by a special Disnovation video screening of new works by contemporary artists and a poster exhibition.
Finally, this day will also see Russian premiere of the art project by Clémence de la Tour du Pin Computer store original. An experiment in making of a scent created by one artist and four perfumers. As a part of this experiment a brand new scent of a computer store was developed and every visitor would be able to try it at Strelka.

Second day will consist of two performances. The first one — System Introspection from festival curator Nicolas Maigret. In brief, this performance will represent how numerical information reflects upon the material world. A concert-type event will have the binary code as its main instrument. To get a better impression of what it would all look like, watch this.
The second performance will be delivered by Swiss artists and composer Valentina Vuksic. With a major both in new media art and information systems, Valentina works with the noises that occur in the space between software and hardware. At Strelka the artist will present her performance piece titled Tripping through runtime.


Videoformes — one of the oldest festivals dedicated to video art and digital art in France, held annually since 1986 in the city of Clermont-Ferrand. Its main difference compared to Disnovation — a much more positive attitude towards technology. Its founders seek harmony between poetry and digital art. That is why the main goal of the festival is to make the world of technology as accessible as possible to the new emerging artists.

During the first day Gabriel Soucheyre, editor of digital art publication Turbulences Video, a Blaise Pascal University lecturer and Videoforms director will deliver a lecture on video art and present a special round-up of video artworks from the festival related to the theme of technology and science. Among them works by Reynold Reynolds (USA), Alessandro Amaducci (Italy), Mihai Grecu (France — Romania), Jose Man Lius (France), Hee Won Lee (France — South Korea), Lixin Bao (France — China), Hugo Arcier (France), Pierre-Jean Giloux (France), Momoko Seto (France — Japan).
The next day Gabriel Soucheyre will meet with students of Russian art schools and video artists followed by a screening of the Videoformes festival. Works by Russian artists might appear on the programme as well. Polytechnic Museum has announced an open call for applications of video art works or experimental films dealing with science and technology, the deadline is August 7. Only one piece will be selected and then screened, first at Strelka and later as a part of Videoformes festival 2016 in Clermont-Ferrand.


Olga Kisseleva — artist, director of Science and Art Institute at Sorbonne University. Geographically her career started in Leningrad in 1965, but right now Olga is based in Paris. The list of her exhibitions is outstanding : Centre Pompidou, the Guggenheim Museum, The Art Institute of Chicago, Venice, Istanbul, Dakar, Tirana and Moscow biennales of contemporary art among others. Her works combine such genres as performance, actionism and video art. As a result of her work Kisseleva has earned a reputation as one of the key figures in contemporary art. In two days Olga will present a project of an interactive performance dedicated to oil Self-organization and hold a master class that will result in staging of Moscow version of the performance in collaboration with Russian artists.
The idea for the performance titled Self-organization came to Olga Kisseleva in Kuwait in 2014 when she was invited to visit by the National Council for Culture, Arts and Letters. Despite the fact that oil has become a source of prosperity for Kuwait, “black gold” can sustain the city only for so long and soon a replacement needs to be found soon. This is also one of the numerous dilemmas modern science is dealing with today. The concept for the performance grew out of Olga’s analysis of the modern chemical industry, oil replacement strategies and the human environment. The study of “oil reality” — various conditions and affectations that occur in contemporary society as a result of intensive oil consumption — was the first step for the artist. The second stage was devoted to the translation of studied phenomena into the language of dance and digital technology.
On August 22 a creative meeting with Olga Kisseleva will take place where the artist will talk about her project in more detail.

On the second day Olga Kisseleva will open a workshop that will see her performance Self-organization re-staged featuring Russian artists. The participants will be selected by the Polytechnic museum: performance artists as well as media artists and curators interested in the nature of interactive performance and its links to science art are all welcome to apply.
The Moscow version of the performance will be staged by three groups of participants representing chemical agents and the biological environment.
Moscow version of Self-organization is a project realised in collaboration with the Interactive Performance laboratory specifically for Polytechnic Museum Polytech.Science.Art programme at the Strelka Institute.


Final event of the Polytech.Science.Art summer session at Strelka will present one of the headliners of Nuits Sonores festival (one of the main events in the world of electronic music in France). Electronic musician Laurent Prot will run a workshop about the synthesis of analog sound, modular synthesizers, modern scientific and technological components of the process of creating electronic music. His project – IN AETERNAM VALE – was launched in Lyon (France) in 1983 and consisted of three people. Now Laurent, who is also a participant of the industrial techno band Sandwell District, is the only engine of IN AETERNAM VALE, releasing his music at such a labels as Minimal Wave and Jealous God.

The curator of the Polytech.Science.Art program of the Polytechnic Museum is Natalia Fuchs, an art historian (MediaArtHistories, Donau Universität) and cultural management expert (Cultural Management, University of Manchester).
